What to do

The first 72 hours after a crash

These steps may help protect your health and your claim.

1

Call 911 and stay at the scene.

Get police and paramedics on the way. A police report creates an official record of what happened.

2

Get checked out — even if you feel okay.

Adrenaline can mask pain. Some injuries, like concussions and soft-tissue damage, may not show up for hours or days. A same-day medical visit documents your condition.

3

Photograph everything you safely can.

Vehicles, road conditions, skid marks, traffic signals, your injuries, the other driver's license and insurance card. Video is even better.

4

Get witness names and contact info.

Bystanders may not stick around. A name and phone number takes 30 seconds and may matter a great deal later.

5

Be careful what you say to insurers.

You are not required to give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer. A brief, factual statement to your own insurer is usually fine — but call us first if you can.

6

Contact us before deadlines pass.

California injury claims have deadlines. Claims involving a city, county or state agency may have much shorter notice periods. Acting early protects your evidence and your options.

Crash FAQ

Plain-English answers

What waiting can cost

California has deadlines for injury claims, and claims against a city, county or the state can have much shorter notice periods. Business and traffic video gets recorded over, and e-bikes and vehicles get repaired. Acting early protects your evidence.
